the third Ester Brinkmann actually came out several months ago. I never heard "Weisse Nacht" but I have heard "totes rennen" and this one ("Der Ubersetzer," with the yellow towel on the cover). The latest one is very much in the more abstract vocal loop style, with little to no beats, mostly more tape-loop sounding stuff. it's ok, but not as engaging to me as the other stuff. I really like the balance of beats and samples/fx on "Totes Rennen." Some of his later work is too esoteric for my tastes, but I am looking forward to hearing the Marcus Nikolai collaboration that just came out. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Okay - I'll chime in too. I have Weisse Naechte (thanks, you know who you are!) but never fully comprehended where it was coming from. I'm sure that the spoken word texts are meaningful for Brinkmann himself, although out of his personal context, it becomes vaguely voyeuristic the first time round, but then loses its hold (on me, at least). It is a rather esoteric listen, which might work for some, but never gelled with me. However, I only recently bought Totes Rennen and although my knowledge of German and French certainly go some way towards deeper understanding, those linguistic hurdles are not vital - I think he uses the sound of the human voice more in the sense of adding a sound source rather than a lyrical contribution (expecially in the case of Totes Rennen where text is looped very repetitively, rather than more lyrically, as is the case in Weisse N. where whole 'poems' are recited). It's very pure rhythmic pulsing, which is quite visceral. I intend using it more in the sense of a 'DJ tool' - ie. having another more melodic track running over it and using Brinkmann as a heartbeat below. Totes Rennen is far more universally accessible, imo and a pretty solid release. +++ If anybody has German texts/lyrics they want translated (not tooooooo long, please!) send them along.
